- HIV AIDS Conference LAUSD a big success
Saturday January 20, 2007 saw over 100 health teachers, other educators,
professors, from LA and Orange County area meet at the St AnneÕs Center in
LA to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention. Under the leadership of Ric Loya
(teacher advisor) and co sponsored by LAUSD and CASHE, teachers
benefited from many interactions. Topics included Dr. Michael Gottleib
(formerly UCLA) on HIV ÔThen & Now,Õ Dr. Jim PECK (UCLA) reviewed METH
addiction and HIV, Dr. Denise Ridley Davis (ACS) presented updates on the
new HPV vaccine and Dr. Britt Rios Ellis (CSULB) discussed the special
impact on HIV in the Latina population.
CASHE officers invited attendees to join CASHE and attend the upcoming
fall conference at UCLA
center in Lake Arrowhead Nov 16-18.
Major Kim Sinclair was also elected as a new member of the CASHE board.
Kim teaches health in Glenda Ca.
Teachers attended breakout sessions to review the new California State
Standards and made recommendations to the State Board of Education.
Standards for Health Education are not yet finalized.
- Huntington Beach
Union HS District Brings Back Health Ed
After a four-year
hiatus, The Huntington Beach Union High School District decided to
re-introduce Health Education into the course requirements as a full
semester. The district required the class for about 30 previous years, but
budget issues and other concerns (Ôother content standardsÕ, API data
etc., canceled the class in 2003). Sources from the district stated that
it was the kids who lobbied the board, plus a suicide and drug overdose
problem, to require the course again. Class will be mandated in the fall
of 2007.
- CASHE Fall Conference Scheduled
at UCLA/In the Mountains Lake Arrowhead Center, Nov 16-18
CASHE Board has scheduled the
beautiful UCLA Conference
Center at Lake Arrowhead again for the fall of 2007. For those who
have never been to this elegant 5 star facility, click here, and learn more about the center. Teachers will be treated with
special care, be served 5 star food, stay in individual cabins with
fireplaces while reviewing health topics, listen to great speakers and
discuss teaching ideas. MARK THE DATE NOV 16-18. CASHE board members will
meet in February to plan the event. Click on the cashe.org conference link
